Through lively discussion, sharing perspectives, and engaging in thoughtful debate, we’re taking a community-driven approach to transform workplace mental health.

You’re a Careholder—Here’s Why It Matters

Chances are, if you’re here, you’re what we affectionately call a careholder for workplace mental health. That means you’re deeply invested in mental health and actively shaping how it’s managed in the workplace—whether you realize it or not. If you’re curious about why we care, check out our Philosophy.

The term careholder builds on the concept of stakeholders but adds an element of care, compassion, and thoughtfulness that is appropriate when addressing mental health. For a deeper read on the concept, I invite you to check out this article by Curtis Ogden.

The Power of Careholders: Diverse Influencers in Workplace Mental Health

Careholders come in many forms, and each category plays a pivotal role in shaping the management of workplace mental health. Let’s break them down:

  1. Employers: The leaders and decision-makers who shape the work environment for their employees.
  2. Government: The regulators and legislators defining the rules by which employers must operate.
  3. Industry: Groups offering representation to specific sectors of employers.
  4. Public: Everyone not assigned a specific role. Yes, you can be more than one at once!
  5. Workers: The individuals powering organizations through their daily contributions.

Influence in Action: A Snapshot of Workplace Dynamics

Imagine an employer contemplating a revised mental health leave policy. This decision doesn’t occur in isolation. Employers are not only attuned to the needs and feedback from their workforce (workers), but they’re also mindful of societal expectations (public) and legal requirements (government). Industry groups (industry) may provide insights into best practices and benchmarks, while the public, fueled by growing awareness around mental health, expects progressive and compassionate policies. All the while, the employer still needs to turn a decent profit so that running a business is worthwhile.

The threads of influence from workers, government, industry, and the public interweave, ultimately shaping the employer’s decision-making process.

In this intricate tapestry, each careholder group contributes to the evolution of workplace mental health policies, highlighting the collaborative and interconnected nature of our collective influence.
